Egypt's Old Kingdom
How did Egypt's Old Kingdom develop?
Egypt had rulers called Pharaohs that were like gods to them. Egyptians were polytheistic, or worshipped many gods. Re was the sun god. Hapi was the Nile River god. Isis & Osiris were the gods of death. Unlike the Mesopotamians, the Egyptians believed in a hopeful afterlife. One of the most important manuscripts was the Book of Dead. This book contained prayers & spells that Egyptians believed that if they studied and memorized, they would be allowed into the afterlife by Osiris.
As soon as a Pharaoh was announced, the Egyptian lower class would begin their tomb. It would take about 200 years to finish one tomb. After the Pharaoh died, the Egyptians would begin mummification. They would basically strip the body internally and cover it in salts and perfume. Then they would wrap it in linens. (cloth) They would put the body in one coffin, then into another, and another, etc. until they would put the Pharaoh in the tomb. (pyramid) Pharaoh's servants were sacrificed and buried by the Pharaoh. They were also mummified. Another word for this is embalming.
Problem: People had to get pyramid stones to the pyramid.
Solution: Different theories show that Egyptians could have dug a canal to float it the the pyramid.
